Bass clef notes chart

C2D2E2F2G2A2B2C3D3E3F3G3A3B3C4D4E4
Every bass clef note from C2 (two ledger lines below) to E4 (two ledger lines above). Middle C, C4, is on the first ledger line above the staff.

The bass clef is the F clef. It grew out of a stylised letter F, and its two dots sit either side of the fourth line from the bottom, which marks that line as F3, the F below middle C. Every other note follows alphabetically, alternating line and space: the space above F is G, the top line is A; the space below F is E, the middle line is D.

Lines and spaces: the mnemonics

Bottom to topNotesMemory aid
LinesG B D F AG2 B2 D3 F3 A3Good Boys Do Fine Always
SpacesA C E GA2 C3 E3 G3All Cows Eat Grass

Just outside the five lines, F2 hangs in the space below the bottom line and B3 sits in the space above the top line. Those 11 notes, F2 to B3, are level 3 of the game.

Why bass clef feels harder (and the fix)

Most people learn treble clef first, so a note on the bottom line of the bass staff tries to come out as E. In bass clef it's G. Every bass clef position is named two letters higher than the same position in treble clef: E becomes G, F becomes A, G becomes B. That shift is useful as a check, but don't read bass clef by translating from treble. Learn it as its own clef, from its own landmarks, and practise the two clefs mixed on the grand staff once both are solid so you're forced to look at the clef every time.

Landmark notes

From F, one step down is E and one skip down is D. From middle C, one step down is B3, the space above the staff. Reading by step and skip from landmarks is faster than spelling out a sentence, and it trains the same sense of distance you use to hear intervals.

Ledger lines above and below the bass staff

Below the bass staff: F2 in the space, E2 on the first ledger line, D2 under it and C2 on the second ledger line. Above: B3 in the space, C4 (middle C) on the first ledger line, D4 just above it and E4 on the second ledger line. Bass players, cellists and bassoonists read a lot of ledger lines above the staff; cello, bassoon and trombone switch to tenor clef when a passage would need too many.

A sharp (♯) raises a note by a semitone and a flat (♭) lowers it by one. The letter still comes from the line or space, so a flat on the B line is B♭. Level 5 of the game adds them; the circle of fifths shows which belong to each key signature.

Who reads bass clef?

Bass clef covers the lower range: cello, double bass, bass guitar, bassoon, trombone, euphonium, tuba, timpani, baritone and bass voices, and the left hand of the piano. Double bass and bass guitar parts sound an octave lower than written. Pianists read bass clef together with treble on the grand staff.

How to practise bass clef notes with the game

A few minutes a day works better than one long session (see spaced repetition for musicians). Go for accuracy first; speed follows. Say the note name out loud before you tap, and when a level feels easy, mix it up: interleaved practice is harder in the moment but sticks better.

Frequently asked questions

What are the notes of the bass clef?

The five lines from bottom to top are G, B, D, F and A (G2 to A3). The four spaces are A, C, E and G (A2 to G3). Just outside the staff are F2 below and B3 above, and with ledger lines the bass clef continues up to middle C and beyond, and down to C2 and lower.

How do you remember the bass clef notes?

Lines: Good Boys Do Fine Always (G B D F A). Spaces: All Cows Eat Grass (A C E G). Then learn landmark notes, such as F on the fourth line between the clef dots and middle C on the first ledger line above, and read other notes as steps from them.

Where is middle C on the bass clef?

Middle C (C4) sits on the first ledger line above the bass staff. The B just below it is in the space above the top line.

Why is the bass clef called the F clef?

The bass clef developed from a stylised letter F. Its two dots sit either side of the fourth line, marking that line as F3, the F below middle C.

Why do I keep reading bass clef notes as treble clef notes?

Because the same position names a different note: each bass clef line or space is two letters higher than in treble clef, so the bottom line is G, not E. Practise bass clef on its own until it is automatic, then mix both clefs so you have to check the clef each time.

Is this bass clef notes game free?

Yes. It is free, with no signup and no email gate, and it runs in your browser on phone or desktop. Your note map and sprint bests are saved on your device only. On iPhone, sound starts after your first tap because iOS requires a tap before a page can play audio.
